Someone to look out for

Armstrong, spent nearly a year in the Paul Robi Platters after Robi's passing away. Armstrong was fired from the group because he lacked the required talent for the Platters signature classic sound.

I received numerous faxes, emails and phone calls from a lot of pissed off people, asking me if I knew this guy Elmer Armstrong. Literally years after I had resigned from the Platters. I had actually tried to work with Armstrong in a local group called Plattnum. Things didn't work out.

I was told that Armstrong was going around using the trademarked name The Platters. I called Mr. Armstrong and asked him if he indeed was using the Platters' name and he quickly denied it, and said to me, {Oh no man, I'm doing a solo act} I do a lot of Sinatra and music like that.

People such as promoters, club owners and buyers were asking me, as if I had any say as to who uses the name The Platters. What the hell is this guy thinking? He's horrible, The guy is making a mockery of the groups great sound. What is he thinking?

I expressed my feelings to Armstrong about people that are not given permission from an original member or being licensed by someone legit. He agreed and I actually wanted to believe him, but knowing how bad he wants to be a part of the Platters history only says that he'll continue until he's stopped by a lawsuit and the proper authorities.

I'm not an original member of the Platters, but I did spend 21 years with the group. I was friends with Zola Taylor, and actually did perform with her. I was also a friend to Tony Williams the original lead singer of the Platters.

Paul Robi, the original baritone singer was like a father and brother to me. Paul taught me about vocal harmony, theory and stage presence skills that only the original members knew about. I spent 15 years with Paul Robi before he passed away from cancer, and six years after.

Yes it bothers me that people like Elmer Armstrong use the Platters hard earned celebrity status, only to cheapen the sound it took many years to develop. The Original members barely receive the credit that they: Herb Reed, David Lynch, Paul Robi, Zola Taylor and Tony Williams deserve.
